How My Hair Journey Became My Healing Journey

For someone who has always struggled with hair issues at a young age, I thought keeping my hair short was the best decision. I didn’t have the knowledge or understanding needed to maintain healthy hair or retain length. I had simply given up and accepted that my hair would be short forever.

My new purpose and role in the beauty industry shifted my perspective—specializing in healthy hair and hair restoration to help women achieve their hair goals, build confidence, and become the women God created them to be.

Helping women on their individual hair journeys and witnessing them achieve their goals made me realize that I could do it for myself as well. All I needed to do was apply everything I learned while obtaining my hair loss certification, my experience creating custom regimens from consultations, prayer, and consistency—and I knew I could achieve different results. Results I didn’t expect. Results that would change what I thought and had accepted for years.

Just to give you a little background:

  • My mom applied a box relaxer on my hair at the age of 4. She also used a pressing comb.

  • As I got older, I began doing my own hair with no knowledge of proper hair care.

  • I experienced breakage for years due to improper relaxer and color applications, along with harmful styling techniques.

  • As an adult, I was diagnosed with a hormonal disorder called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) that causes excessive shedding and can lead to Androgenetic Alopecia.

  • I experienced postpartum hair loss after having my daughter.

  • I have a mild case of seborrheic dermatitis.

  • My hair is now natural, coily, and fine in texture.

Can you imagine the toll ALL of this took on my hair?! Excessive shedding that could lead to hair loss, brittleness that caused constant breakage, dryness that caused even more breakage, and an unmanaged scalp condition. On top of that, I wasn’t drinking water at all, I didn’t eat well, and I was prediabetic with low Vitamin D and B12.

If I could sum up in one word what ALL of this did to my hair, I would say: WEAK.

But I had the ability to change that. Here’s what I did to get my hair to grow longer, stronger, healthier, with a healthier scalp—and with less shedding:

What I Did to Heal My Hair:

  • I shampooed and conditioned every 2 weeks when my hair was out, alternating treatments based on what my hair and scalp needed.

    • Steam hydration treatments (for dryness)

    • Protein treatments (for brittleness)

    • Hair restoration treatments (for excessive shedding)

    • Medicated shampoos for my scalp condition

  • I trimmed my ends as often as needed.
Most women only need trims every 3 months or longer, but because of my hair condition, I had to trim every 2 months until my hair healed. That took time.

  • I utilized protective styles more often because of my fine hair texture. I knew if I kept my hair out too often, it would become brittle and break. I needed to give it time to strengthen.

  • I took my Vitamin D and B12 supplements, ate better to help with prediabetes (cutting back on carbs and sugar), took a hair supplement (Divine Images Growth Vitamins), and drank more water. I also managed stress to help reduce shedding.

  • I prayed for the hair results I wanted.
The results didn’t appear like magic. They came through wisdom, understanding, discipline, and consistency put into action.

  • I used Divine Images Beauty Solutions hair care products—100% natural and organic ingredients that nourish the scalp, care for the hair, create a healthy scalp environment, promote healthy hair growth, and help prevent hair loss.

With wisdom and consistency comes the hair results you desire.

It took me years to learn what worked best for my hair, but once I figured it out, it didn’t take long to achieve the results I desired. My hair is the longest it has ever been in my life—not because my mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother naturally had long beautiful hair. Not because I always had the best hair care practices. But because I learned what my hair needed specifically and applied it.

Waiting years to discover what your hair needs doesn’t have to be your story.
